Hardshell Hyper Calvinism

Some Hardshells, like Elder Lemuel Potter (in his debate with Throgmorton), argue that since Hyper Calvinism existed in the 18th century, therefore Hardshellism existed then also; And, if this argument is valid and true, then we can no longer say that Hardshellism was born in the 19th century. However, this is not true because the Hyper Calvinists of the 18th century did not deny gospel means in regeneration and in eternal salvation. The Hyper Calvinism of the 18th century centered around whether Christ is to be "offered" to sinners in the preaching of the gospel. It involved a denial of warrant for certain kinds of invitations to the lost.

What Hardshellism is today is the end result of 18th century Hyper Calvinistic thinking. It is really hyper hyper Calvinism. The denial that God uses the gospel and word of God in saving sinners is Hyper Calvinism on steroids, or gone to seed. It is an outgrowth.

What think ye?
