This is reported to have been said by Winston Churchill, but others deny that he ever said it. Regardless, the statement is indeed true.
Over the past several years I have watched News Organizations go to the streets of New York or some other city and begin asking the citizens questions about the history of the United States. Oftentimes the average citizen does not know how many states are in the union, who fought the Civil War or Revolutionary War, or who was the first president, etc. It frightens me to know that such people are voting. It makes me think that we should have a test for basic knowledge in order to be able to vote. I blame this ignorance and illiteracy on the education system in this country that has deteriorated since the days when I was in school.
What think ye?
